We are proud to deliver the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award at ESK. This extra-curricular programme is offered to Secondary students 14 years or older.  This experience allows students to develop essential skills and attributes for work and life. These include: problem-solving, teamwork, resilience and communication. The prestigious award has three progressive levels which lead to the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards - a recognised mark of achievement for their future career prospects and university applications. At the end of their DofE experience, our students are #worldready, with important skills to help them in their journey ahead.

 ESK Students are #WORLDREADY

The DofE requires students to complete the following sections:

VOLUNTARY SERVICE

Voluntary Service encourages young people to volunteer and give service over a set period of time. Examples include visiting people in need, charity work and sports coaching.

SKILLS

Skills encourage the development of personal interests and creativity skills, such as music, painting, public speaking and gardening.

PHYSICAL RECREATION

Physical Recreation challenges students to participate in sport and activity, to help improve their physical and mental health. Examples include football, tennis, running, kayaking and karate.

ESK has DofE certified staff who ensure the students are supported and successful at each section of The Duke of Edinburgh.  Students that have completed the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award speak to their growth as individuals, their ability to time manage and set their own goals effectively, and how they made a positive impact on the community.

The qualifying expeditions are held in November for students completing their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.  Students hike for one, two, or three days, navigating the beautiful mountains of North Cyprus with a map, carrying everything they need in their bags, and working together as a team.  Visit this page for any DofE updates.

An adventurous journey awaits...

of Achievement.

As part of their completion, DofE students are invited to an award presentation with HRH Prince Edward, the acting Duke of Edinburgh.

June 2022, 6 ESK students were in attendance. Successful students from schools across the island were personally congratulated by HRH Prince Edward, for their achievements and were invited to talk about their experience working in small teams to hike and camp in the mountains of Cyprus. They discussed the valuable skills learnt in the process, and how they have also made a positive impact on the local community through volunteering projects.

One ESK student, shared his experience with the Prince, detailing his experiences volunteering at the SPOT Turtle conservation project here in Karpaz and Kyrenia. The Prince certainly took an interest in the local topic.

“At ESK we are proud to have been participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award for a full six years, with excellent numbers of bronze, silver, and gold awardees.  We truly value what the awards encourage, and feel they help young people to become self-reliant, confident, and humane individuals. Having the opportunity for our students to meet and talk to Prince Edward in person was absolutely wonderful!”
